FRIDAY THE 13 IN THE CROSSROADS
Friday the 13th doesn't seem to bring bad luck to some other Crossroads residents:
Tomas Jose Tejera will celebrate his 6th birthday on Friday with his parents, Hernan Tejera and Denise McCue. Tomas was born in Victoria on a Friday the 13th at 7:11 a.m., no less. Andrew Lantz, 39, got hitched on a Friday the 13th. He married his wife, Aura, 30, on June 13, 2003 in Manta, Ecuador. Yes, they're still married, and they live in Victoria.
Triskaidekaphobia doesn't exist in the Gregurek family.
For those less familiar with with Greek etymology, that means "fear of the number 13," explained Summer Gregurek, 14.
"Some people are really scared of the number 13," she said. "It's silly, and we said we're never going to have that in our family."
And if anyone should know about the number 13's influence on luck or lack thereof, it's their family.
Summer was born Aug. 13, 1997, and the East High Schooler celebrated her 13th birthday on Friday the 13th.
Her mom, Shannon Gregurek, was born on a Friday the 13th, in September 1968. And 34 years later, Shannon's daughter Landrie would join the bunch, born Sept. 13, too - a Friday, to boot.
"She got a birthday surprise," Landrie, a fourth-grader at DeLeon Elementary School, said about her mother.
With the first Friday the 13th of 2012 upon them, the family said they don't consider themselves superstitious. The number 13 is neither lucky or unlucky to them. It's just special.
"When you think Friday the 13, you think scary movies and black cats. But, to us, it means birthdays. Let's party," Summer said.
The only bout of bad luck the mother, Shannon, could recall was Sept. 13, 2008, when she turned 40. Whereas most birthdays centered around Landrie's Sept. 13, this one was set to star Shannon.
But that's the year Hurricane Ike forced Victoria's evacuation, leaving party guests scattered, and the birthday venue deserted.
Of course, the man of the house, Mark Gregurek, put it into perspective for his wife and daughters.
"It was actually good luck that the hurricane didn't hit here," he said.
Not that they put much stock in luck, they emphasized, but if the number 13 is anything to them, it's certainly not a bad omen.
The fact that all the girls in the family are born on the 13th should leave no excuse for Mark to forget birthdays, his wife joked.
Saying she doesn't believe in bad luck, Landrie had a more straight-forward reason for why she's happy to have a Friday the 13th birthday.
"Cause it's on my mom's" birthday, she said.
