A group of students at Stroman Middle School defied the school district's dress code in protest Friday.

The students, seventh-graders, apparently used Facebook to garner support for their cause: a day without belts and tucked-in, collared shirts.

"Let's see how much trouble we get in when we show up out of dresscode (sic) :)" one post read.

But by first period, the about 10 protesters who followed through with the rebellion, were disbanded, said Stroman Middle School Principal Lisa Cortez.

"The district isn't going to change (the dress code) back because they defy it," she said.

The students found to be in cahoots were sent to in-school suspension and forced to call their parents.

Under normal circumstances, Cortez said the school would supply belts or shirts to the students to keep them in compliance and in class.

"These kids had to call their parents because they did it on purpose," she said.

This is the second year of the district-wide dress code, and students should know better than to try to challenge it, she added.

"I understand they feel like it's taking away their individuality," Cortez said. "But most kids just accept it, and they realize it's not going away."

  • This kind of stuff happens because the parents of those kids dont care what their children do. I bet that at least half of the parents of these kids will somehow blame the school, teachers or principle for their kids problems, but if they looked in a mirror. they would see where the problem lies. WELL DONE MRS CORTEZ. Keep up the good work.
