Rec Room: Gearing up for spring sports
By Shane Simon
There is a smell in the air and I am not talking about the hint of smoke that has been prevalent since the recent lift on the seemingly infinite burn ban.
The smell I am talking about is a metaphor for the itch that seems to be growing within our local athletes because spring is just around the corner.
The phones have been busy here at the Parks and Recreation office with questions about upcoming sports programs such as adult softball and kickball along with questions about Little League sign ups and girls fast pitch softball registrations.
The Parks and Recreation Department will begin registration for the 2012 spring Victoria softball and kickball leagues on Monday, and continue until the deadline at 5 p.m. Friday, Feb. 10.
We have a few changes to our leagues this season. We will now be offering all of our leagues in both a competitive and recreational format. Teams will need to choose which format best fits their team makeup and then register their team appropriately.
If a team is newly formed or just playing for fun and exercise, then the team will register in the recreational division.
If a team's main concern is being the best and winning games, they will register in the competitive division. What better time to help with any New Year's resolutions dealing with health than to get out and play? Getting your friends, relatives or coworkers together is the easiest way to form a team.
If you don't have enough players to form your own team, we will have a free agents list that will go out to all the coaches within the division you want to play so they can contact you to join the fun.
Registration forms are available at the Parks and Recreation Office, 476 McCright Drive in Riverside Park or online at playvictoriatexas.com.
Little League along with Challenger League registrations will be Jan. 21, at Hey Batter Batter!, 2702 N. Laurent St., and Jan. 28 and Feb. 4, at the Victoria Mall.
Registration is open to all children who are 4 by April 30, to 12. All parents must bring a copy of your child's birth certificate, proof of residency and your player so they can be properly fitted for their uniform.
For questions please contact one of the four zone presidents: Northwest Zone - Kit Mitchell, 361-648-6609; Northeast Zone - Adolph Hernandez, 361-935-2082; Southwest Zone - Jeff Holly, 361-550-2435; or Southeast Zone - Mike Craft, 361-676-4123.
Victoria Girls Softball Association was in the process of finalizing its registration dates at the time of print. We will host that information online at playvictoriatexas.com when it becomes available.
We wish all the area participants an enjoyable time in their respective sport and look forward to the excitement we all feel when the umpire yells "Play Ball."
