A woman was hospitalized after a wreck on the Houston Highway on Monday evening.
A red Hyundai Elantra, driven by Becky Bernal, 56, of Victoria, was traveling south on Houston Highway at about 7 p.m. when her car struck an 18-wheeler, said Victoria Police Officer Joseph Felan.
The 18-wheeler trailer was backing out of the driveway of Tile and Granite Expo, in the 4400 block of Houston Highway, into the southbound lane when the Hyundai struck its right side, crushing the front of the car and scattering debris across the road, Felan said. The truck driver, Ramsey Gonzalez, 36, was issued a citation for backing up when unsafe.
Ramsey Schawa, the manager of the store, was helping Gonzalez back out of the driveway when the Hyundai struck the truck, he said.
"All of a sudden this car appeared. It happened so fast," Schawa said.
The Victoria Police Department and the Victoria Fire Department responded to the call. Bernal was pinned in the car. The Victoria Fire Department freed her from the car using the Jaws of Life, said Victoria Battalion Chief Roger Hempel.
Bernal was taken by ambulance to Citizens Medical Center where she was still being evaluated Monday night, a hospital spokesman said.
