Olympic marathon trials hit Houston streets
The Olympic Marathon Trials took place Saturday under perfect running conditions.
Shalane Flanagan set an Olympic trials record with a winning time of 2:25.38 in only her second marathon.
Meb Keflezighi earned his third Olympic berth with a personal best of 2:09.08.
Flanagan was one of five women that finished under the 2:30 marathon mark, while Keflezighi led four men under 2:10, also a first in trials history.
Area runners compete at Houston
Sunday was the 40th anniversary of the Houston Marathon, with approximately 17,000 runners competing in either the marathon or the half marathon.
There were 4,196 men and 5,220 women who competed in the half marathon.
Feyisa Lilesa was the overall male winner with a time of 59:22. Belaynesh Olijira was the overall female winner with a time of 1:08.26.
The average time for males was 2:09 and 2:26 for the females.
There were 4,824 men and 2,782 females who competed in the marathon, with Alemitu Abera taking the women's title with a 2:23.14, and Januku Jufar claiming the men's win with a 2:06.51.
The average finishing time for all men was 4:12 and it was 4:30 for all women.
