In a recent conversation about cultural Christianity with a pastor friend of mine, I learned something interesting about Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Famer, Jerry Lee Lewis.

The "Great Balls of Fire" singer, revered for his high-energy, boogie-woogie piano and vocal skills, had early aspirations of using his musical talents for the church.

Before the launch of Lewis' career in the 1950s, he was briefly enrolled at Southwest Bible Institute in Waxahachie, primed to perform evangelical God tunes with a rock 'n' roll twist. But The Killer's unconventional sound at a school talent show one night - even while performing the worship tune "My God Is Real" - ruffled a few feathers in conservative Christendom, and Lewis was expelled the next day.

Lewis would go on to generate numerous chart-topping songs and receive recognition from Rolling Stone Magazine in 2003 as one the top 100 Greatest Artists of All Time. There's even a movie about his career, "Great Balls of Fire!"

The brazen singer-songwriter didn't waste his God-given talents. He used them often, and used them well - he simply used them for the world, rather than God.

And as my pastor friend and I discussed Lewis' school expulsion, we fantasized about what would have become of him if his Christian community hadn't turned up their nose.

What if his fellow God-followers encouraged Lewis' talents and prayed over his unconventional style? What if they recognized his willingness to inspire and excite others about the Lord through his musical gifts, rather than banish him for not fitting neatly into the cultural, 1950's Christian box?

What if all these years later, Lewis was recognized as a great gospel singer, an evangelical paragon, rather than one of the secular world's best musical talents? (Lewis' marriage scandal to his 13-year-old cousin notwithstanding).

My pastor friend attended the same university as Lewis, now called Southwestern Assemblies of God University, and said he thinks of Lewis often when he considers what real, timeless Christianity is supposed to look like.

And he said he uses Lewis' story whenever he considers his own ministry and how he chooses to teach the youth about God's love for them. He now recognizes the gravity of Christian culture and aims not to follow the rules of man and church and denominational tradition, which will inevitably change again and again as the years pass. No, he aims to follow God, his holy Scriptures, and the model of Jesus: No glitter, no robes, no prerequisites for admission.

I relate to Lewis' story because I remember growing up with an understanding that God's rules and the rules of my parent's church were taught as superior to walking in God's love. Over time, I too, became exhausted with the culture and eventually rejected Jesus and his church.

But I was blessed to be wooed back into God's embrace - through a network of strong, unconventional Christians - and find an unwavering relationship with my Lord. I was blessed to find a few strong, love-minded Christ followers who refused to turn up their nose to me, when others thought I was too worldly, and spend time answering my (sometimes hostile) questions.

I was blessed that my unconventional Christianity, eight years later, affords me the opportunity to dialogue about God on a daily basis.

But my future and relationship with God could have been much different if I'd kept down the same road. Funnily enough, it seems Lewis' future could have been much different as well.

  • Gary - As christ talked to the prostitute at the well of the town the others asked him why he was talking to a lowly prostitute. Jesus replyed to the effect of ........ he goes to the people that need him the most. People that listen to rock and roll music will NOT listen to christian music. PERIOD! To reach these people God needs to use rock and roll music. Music can be bad or good. It depends on the lyrics of the song. Music is just another way God uses to reach his people. Thank you for your time in this matter.

God bless you & thanks, just one more word if I may. Most of the Christian rock music is very shallow, it is often very ecumenical in nature; the Buddhist Muslims, Catholics, protestants, hippies, rappers Janes & Seeks etc can all sing it with out being offended. On the surface this might seem very nice & Christ like but it is off the Scriptures; How can 2 walk together lest they be agreed says the Book. Forsaking Scriptures for the sake of unity is something that God never did forgive the Israelites when they joined with Moab in the Old Testament.

  • Gary- Let's agree to disagree. You will never change my mind and I will never get you to see music in all its forms is just music. The lyrics are made by man And man is not perfect. The devil is attempting to take over the soles on earth and the end is near. How far away? No one but God himself knows. Thank you for your time in a reply to my post.

  • What brought me here was the original article and it's interesting thought about what if Jerry Lee Lewis had stayed in the church? The church that he was told from the moment he was born was the only way, he and his family helped build, the church were buried his older brother, the very essense of his upbringing that he attented with his family. He did not know that this cherishing environment that he longed to be part of would reject him becuase he put a beat to 'My God is real' a boogie on the piano just once rejected him from this place that he would have hoped would have been his home.
Religion does not come from God it comes from man and comments above really prove that a lot of people believe that their way is the only way. they do not listen to anything else 'it's my way or the highway' or hell usually. Perhaps all this hardheaded rejection and mistrust is the fall of man. Judge not less you be judged.
I understand that a disruption to your way of life is hard to manage but we all have disruptions it's how you deal with it that determines the outcome.
Jerry Lee Lewis only ever sings 'old time' gospel he sings it straight and he sings it exciting. He always sticks up for his God and the world nows that his music comes from the struggle within that is a very human thing that we all can relate too. Something that can 'saves souls' if that's what that person wants. Choices.
The film 'Great balls of fire' was not accurate in it's storytelling so don't take it as truth how things were or how things were said.
Me? I have been in a religious upbringing I still believe in God but never want religion in my life I have seen through the greed, control and manipulation that church does so well. You say that you are not part of this world you are apart but I totally disagree. You are very much part of this world you can't get away that easily.

If you still love me, I would like to recommend some must reading; its a book called; Confessions of a former worship leader Why I left the Contemporary Christian Music Movement.

Its by Dan Lucarini (evangelical press)

I was a Deacon in good standing with the Lord, My church & its leadership for 17 yrs. This music crept into our church, eventually it had death hold on us. As a watchman on the wall the The Lord alerted me to this error & I begin to with stand it.

We had amassing (so called) song services, oh the emotions, goose bumps etc that rock brought us. The young really diged it as well as the backsliden song leaders. They were seldom in church & when they were there they displayed little or no interest in the Word of God as it was being preached.

I stood awe shocked as the ministry began to come to the musicians defense, which most was there own family & were rich in financial donations.

After having my heart blown out from the sacred pulpit (so called) complete with many public whippings for a number of years, I resigned. With in the next year or so more truth began to come out in connection with most of the musicians & there leaders. Pedophilia, statutory rape, adultery, dirty/crooked business deals. The drummer was hooked on porn etc etc.

The church split that took place rocked the world, at least amongst the churches in our circles of fellowship, it has been a huge wake up call to many.

It is my hope that this testimony will be a help to you & others, its not meant to be rude or abrasive.

    Thanks GW

All inspiration comes from God, satan has the ability to take that inspiration & use it for his own agenda.

The Bible says that in the last days God would pour out His Spirit on ALL flesh, ALL FLESH is not saved.

Thats why it is also written that in the last days that the deception would be so close that it would even deceive the very elect if it were possible. The very elect of Christ will not be deceived because she has the Holy Ghost & checks everything by the word.

Sex, drugs, & rock & roll, why is that such a common saying? They do go hand in hand.

There is no such a thing as a Christian cigarette, a Christian prostitute or Christian rock.

These artist look like feminine beat necks, they look like the world, they act like the world, they sing like the world because they are the world only worse because they mix mix just enough religion in there music/lives to satisfy the little religious taste that they have.

I would say that the most telling sign that speaks against the Christian rockers is THERE ATTITUDE & A COMPLETE DIREGUARD FOR THE THE MANY 1000s OF SOULS THAT THEY HAVE DESTROYED & STUMBLED. THE HOLY GHOST IS FULL OF LOVE & COMPASHION,IT IS SWEET & GENTAL, LIKE A LAMB.

Your drums are loud & proud, full of attitude, this music is in your face, who cares what you think because its what I want. Many of the musicians are more interested in show casing themselves & featuring/celebrating there great talents etc. I dont need to see any Scriptures to tell me that that is NOT the Holy Spirit. Self serving, self promoting etc.

When a person is truly sealed by the Holy Spirit they will even shun the very appearance of the world, not go & emulate them every chance they get.

I remember watching Allan Alda years ago on MASH, he had a little boom box which was causing some grief in the tent where they lived. Allan was disputing with the other doctors over his music. He said listen dadio, if you dont like my radio, then stay off my patio.

I dont mean this disruptively but couldn't a person increase there church membership by raffling off cars or something like that?

I believe that preaching the unadulterated Word, with signs & miracles following is what should attract the the youth & save souls. NOT SEEING HOW CLOSE WE CAN GET TO THE WORLD.

Thats what Lot did, he was a carnal believer living in Sodom by choice & it cost him dearly.

If we love the world or the things of the world, the love of God is not in us. My brother I know that this is a hard GOS PILL to swallow, just pray & fast about it, we/I dont want to be found fulfilling the vision that was givin some 50 yrs ago. Just going by results that are produced . I dont believe that it is a safe & accurate method of determining if something is the will of God.

  • I remember the scene in "Greta Balls of Fire" when Jimmy Swaggart-played by Alec Baldwin-told Jerry -played by Dennis Quad-'You are goin' to Hell"
to which he replied-Well,if I'm goin' to hell then I'm goin' playin' my Peeana!
And if hell exists, he probably will.
Always thought it was interesting that Jimmy Swaggart,Jerry Lee Lewis and
Mickey Gilly were first cousins. What a trio!

  • Music is a set of rhymithic sound pressure levels and frequencies that is plesaureable to the human ear. Music is neither positive or negative, good or bad. That is like blaming a rock for your grade on a test. Senseless!

Gary.... God did not write any songs that I know of at this time. If you could give a bible page that says God wrote a song, that would be nice. I think you are wrong about rock and roll music. It is the human that decides to blame an inantimate object for the problems of humanity. Open your mind and look at it from my point. I have seen it from yours. Been there, done that and will continue to worship the lord with a music that will reach the masses. How many soles have been saved with rock and roll? I have seen many. I have also seen many saved the old fashion way too! Gary I disagree with you sir. The line has been drawn. The ball is in your court sir.
    Thank you!

  • Nice thought about the what ifs with Mr Lewis.

Although there may be some merit with the thought of trying to more patiently steer Mr Lewis in the rite direction, never the less Christ does not change His mind about what is sinful & what is not. We sometimes unfortunately do. This fact is reflected & can be seen in most of the modern churches today, especially in the area of there music.

Mr Lewis 50s music that was demonised (rightfully so) then is to be considered kids play compared to the rock & roll in churches today.

We have had a great witness in our day in the form of a prophet named William. This man saw in a prophetic vision in the 60s a procession of people the angel of the Lord called Miss America, it was the modern church of America. This group of people went marching by with very few cloths on, they were moving from side to side dancing to rock & roll & being led by a beautiful witch.

As the vision unfolded Miss America danced herself in to Hell, you could hear the awfullest screams as she meet her doom.

Then another group of women marched by, they were correctly (modestly) dressed. They were in steep & marching to the song of onward Christian soldier. They were the Bride of Jesus Christ. As they went by a few of the women started to get out of steep & out of line. The prophet screamed stay in line, stay in line.. He said that the Bride of Jesus Christ began to get out of line because they were being influenced by the Miss America church that had just gone into chaos.

This vision which is now coming to pass 50 yrs latter should serve as warning to us.

It could be said that rock & roll has done more to erode our moral values than anything I know of, especially in the area of illicit sex.

This same prophet said rock & roll will lead us to Armageddon.

The old timers had it right, stay with the Godly old Hymns that He Himself (Holy Ghost) wrote. There heart felt & prepare the heart to receive the Word as it is preached from behind the pulpit.

    God Bless Gary White
