  • What concerns me is...these fights happen everywhere, in public places, schools, middle of the streets, and neighborhoods... it is stated parents condone/support this type of behavior, however, I read no mention of anyone, adults, calling police to inform of such behavior. So, do the "adults" who see this negative behavior, do they also condone this practice or are they too afraid to get involved.

  • Stop blaming the Vicad for the story. Someone had to tip them off to even pursue the story. Old man Jimenez could have easily said no comment and they would have had nothing other than a description of the videos in the story.
If you don't seek the attention you wouldn't feed it by participating in the interview.
He puts them on you tube, it's not like he is just recording them and watching them himself or with a few friends.
He wanted the attention and his actions indicate as much.

    January 22, 2012 at 7:32 p.m.
  • These posts are hilarious. I especially enjoy those blaming violence on TV, video games and of course the Victoria Advocate.

    January 22, 2012 at 7:27 p.m.
  • Honestly; People are we showing the same anger and hate that the fist throwing did in the videos, The problem is with the Victoria Advocate choosing to seek him out not Him seeking the fame on front page news. They make a bad choice and they need to be accountable for it. The more pressure we put on these angry kids, not angry birds WE are egging them on. The Victoria Advocate needs to step up and say freedom writers went a bit to far. Yes our schools will be affected and impacted but now the school district will have to step up and now that will be a whole different story, because I could say alot more ugly about VISD failing to step up to their wrongs. Young adults need to be shown responsibility not disrespect. What is said about the person the seeked him out for this story? Peace, Love and Self control. R E S P E C T

  • Robert, aren't you glad this issue has been brought to light? This and other issues may finally get this city to hire more police instead of building nicer sidewalks downtown so only a few benefit, or a parking lot in a park that no one using the park will actually use.

At least this young man has some entrepreneurial spirit at least he's not selling drugs ;)

That said, he is likely profiting off of minors and that could be a crime. This could be considered organized crime as well, and profiting from that is also a crime. Or at the least benefiting from gang activity.

John, are you paying these kids a portion of your proceeds from these fights? Are you even reporting the income from your DVD sales?

John, if so interested in a career in video production, why not take your talents to the local TV station they could use your skills.

Yes there have always been fights but the combatants never used to be prodded into settling their differences so you can profit off the DVD sales.

Thank you NCLB. An 18 year old should be graduating from high school not starting the second semester of his sophomore year. This is a man amongst boys and I am sure some bullying has gone on to get two sides to fight for your benefit.

  • A few thoughts about the contents and actual material discussed in this article. This proves to me that our country is truly in a moral decline when we not only have this going on in our city, but it is glamorized by the VA regardless of what they say and oenly condoned by parents.

What concerns me the most is not that we have this and similar things (youths attacking isolated strangers and beating them within an inch of their life for the fun of it) going on, but the fact that I don't see a way to bring this under control and stop such demonstrations of brutality. Would ya think the violence on TV, pay-for-view, video games, and a lack of family values may have something to do with this? Or nah.....

HE IS TALENTED AND SO WHATVIF HE IS 18 AND A SOPHOMORE YOUR KIDS ARE NOT ANY.BETTER THEN ANYONE ELSE! HE IS NOT HE ONLY 18 STILL IN A SOPHOMORE THERE TONS OF THEM SO RUNNING YOUR MOUTH ABOUT HIM IS RUNNING MOUTH ABOUT AN HUNDRED OTHER KIDS WHO ARE. THE SAME AGE AND GRADE! • It should be easy to identify the fighters, The maker of this trash got permission from each fighters parents or so he said. So, the PD can get a warrant for this guys information on everyone fighting in the video and round them up and if they are under 17, arrest the parents too for child abuse or child exploitation. If anyone is making money on these videos, then I think they are being exploited. Yes, this is a problem but showing the video or even given credit to the guy who made it, is wrong in every sense of the word. You could have written about fighting and it's growing problem and not mentioned the guy's name or shown the video and I think a lot less would have been said about it.

I can not believe a parent condones this. Why not put your so called "talent" to use in a better way? Maybe using these fights as a anti-bullying/fighting message? I wonder if ole John realizes if these fights become criminal investigations, his computer becomes evidence. Instead of bring your boots, how about "Come to Victoria, the armpit of Texas."

I see this promoting of V-Town Fights escalating until someone gets killed. If all these fighters are so tough why don't you take a short trip south to our border and get into some street fights down there.......not so rough and tough as you think you are, are you.

  • When I first read this article, I couldn't believe the Advocate would print this. Slow news, day? But then after I thought about it a little, I have to say thank you, Advocate. Now the VPD along with East HS administrators know who to "keep their eye on." If any of this is happening at the schools, expel and prosecute!

    January 22, 2012 at 10:54 a.m.
  • I think The Victoria Advocate is just trying to make us aware of how this situation is arising in this area... Not to long ago an Austin High School Student was arrested for walking in a school with a gun.. But if you see the news everyday.. The movie stars are getting very much involved in the bullying and fighting going on in school.. Telling them to report it.. Get it out there,..did you see the YouTube video where a young man holds up index cards about him being bullied in school... It's a growing trend..and people need to band together to stop it.. Its not healthy for anyone especially children who just want to go to school and learn.. That's all.. don't condone violence ...stop it... Step up and be the one to say this isn't right...and it's unacceptable..

    January 22, 2012 at 10:53 a.m.
  • Looking at the video it definitely shows that these people can't grow any grass in their yards. Show me some white kids throwing down in Country Club. If you are going to promote Victoria at least show some nice houses.

It appears in a weird way that this is a promotional article by the advocate.

All these comments all pretty much say the same thing. The people of Victoria are disgusted by the article.

I do have a good idea for John. Since this is an "art form" and fits perfectly into the rules, you should send in an application for free money from the HOT tax fund. The good news is it doesn't matter if you apply on time or not, the council and paper will support you fully.

  • Reporting violence is part and parcel to newspaper's mission. The task was complete- perhaps a side story of an individual finding it to be rewarding.

I do not support exploitation of violence, find that to be counterproductive. I did not find a need to watch the video,

Simply stated, other than a story that someone finds reward in filming such - I don't know, perhaps that is newsworthy. Context of video doesn't add anything to the story; in my humble opinion. Of course, as stated above, one does not have to watch.

    January 22, 2012 at 8:51 a.m.
  • To elaborate on what EdithAnn wrote, yes, we reported this as an important issue to our community and society, not to glorify the behavior.
We ask that people commenting stick to the societal issue raised and not attack the people quoted in the story. That is against our user rules. We understand why readers might be bothered by the act of producing such a video, but we ask that you keep the above distinction in mind. Thank you.

  • This type of thing goes on all over America. It is a sad, sad commentary on our youth. It's a reality. I can see where folks think this has no place being publicized. But, bringing this sort of culture, if you will, out in the light can serve as the catalyst for further discussion, as it has done here. The downside is that there will never be any effective action taken regarding this because much more, legitimate dialogue.

Now, on another note--I cannot believe not a one of you suggested that he enter his videos...

    January 22, 2012 at 8:06 a.m.
  • Friends and I encountered such a brawl in the parking lot of the Calhoun County Fair. The gang was clobbering one boy. We yelled for them to stop but the adrenalin was flowing and punches were flying and fists were pounding flesh. They only stopped after they realized we called for police. Then, to my surprise, they all started running in one direction, together. The boy getting his clock cleaned was part of the script. But, even if they did plan this and one buddy drew the short straw and was the whipping boy, things could have gotten out of control. Somebody could have ended up with a concussion or worse. I hope the ‘good’ parents read this article and are better prepared to talk about bruises, broken glasses or phones or even noses.

    January 22, 2012 at 8:04 a.m.
  • Well, the Police now have the Video. All it is now is a matter of IDing the individuals fighting and charging them with Assault and/or Assault w/ Bodily Injury. And JJ better look out too if he is promoting or getting money from these illegal fights.

This is just sickening. In an age where school violence and bullying are out of control and kids bringing weapons to school, now we got parents CONDONING violent behavior.

I don't have a problem with Advocate writing the article and publishing what is happening. It's good to know that this is going on.
What sickens me about the Advocate is the tone of the article which is not a condemnation of this activity but rather looks upon it almost as just another after-school activity! An "Oh Hey! look what the kids are doing... Aren't they cute!"

Advocate, the tone of this article sickens me as much as the parents condoning this behavior.

Hey Mr. New Chief of Police. Whatcha going to do about this? you got the video evidence!

Its called "self-control" most ppl don't have it now & days... AKA sh*t happens! I think VicAd did a great job! Besides that john is creative, talented, and devoted! not to many parents can say that about there children. • Funny all u people want to get mad about something that's is happening in Victoria in your front yard or backyard. Get a grip it'd reality and all He is doin is putting it out there for everyond to see and if you don't.like ot then teach ur kids an alternative way to handle their anger instead of fighting. John is an extremely talented 18 yr when it cones to videos and his passion for music! Im glad the advocate is publishing this to let all you judgemental people know what your not seeing. If your kids are the ones on the videos then I guess u should have taught them a better way to settle a score then to fight. All you people just have tunnel vision and don't want to see thw whole picture. As for Martha she is a single mom who has worked her self to death to make sure they had what they need to get by ! She is not a bad mother she is a supporting one, just like the parents who support their kids getting into those fights and have them videod and put.online.So I would sit back if I were you and think before becoming so judgemental of something you were never aware of to begin with.
