Brian Hyden bowled his career-high series during Sugar & Spice competition to earn the high series of the week honors.

He started league play with an excellent 277 game to set the tone for the night. Hyden finished with games of 258 and 256 to total 791 for the night - just nine pins shy of an 800-series award.

For the three games, he accumulated 29 strikes out of a possible 36 and had no open frames.

Shawn Miller rolled a great 744 series in Sundowner league play, which on most weeks would have been the high series.

I am sure he is extremely happy with the fact he was perfect during the middle game of competition. He posted games of 233, 300, and 211 for his total.

Shawn, a product of a thriving local youth bowling program in the late 1980s, achieved his first perfect game.

It was a good week for high scores as three other bowlers broke the 700 mark.

Randy Vivero posted the third high total with a 258 high game contributing towards a 730 set.

Mike Stacy (267-713/696) and Randy "Ojo" Morris (248-702) scored the next highest.

Other good scores for the men were Scott Snow (276-699), Dave Matthews (267-696/669), Steve Zeplin (680/667), Patrick Bowland (675), Steve Dickinson (671), Abel Garcia (664), David Persilver (663), Eric Smith (663), Ben Mooney (259-662), Abe Suarez (661), Jerry Cano (660), L. Boyd (660), Tony Bennett (267), Jimmy Flores (265), Kenny Schupbach (259), Justin Tweedle (254) and senior bowler Arnold Scheffer (246).

Christine Speer was high for the women again with a very nice set during Sugar & Spice play.

Speer rolled games of 194, 247, and 196 for a 637 series.

Sharon Guinn was not far behind with a nice individual game of 245 helping towards a 634.

Other nice scores for the women were Rebekah Martinez (608) and youth bowler Bailey Koebrick (256 high game).

Personal-best sets for new bowlers are Stephanie Fuller (415) and Donna Jenkins (401).

Upcoming tournaments

The entry deadlines for several important tournaments are drawing near.

The Victoria USBC Women's Annual Tournament deadline is Feb. 10, and the Victoria USBC Annual Open is March 9.

There is great excitement for competitive bowlers to sign up for these tournaments. They are handicap tournaments so everyone has a chance to win.

The Women's 75th State Tournament deadline is March 15 and is being held in the Fort Worth area.

The Texas State Open Tournament deadline is Feb. 1 and is being held in the Austin area.

England's Stuart Williams, a third year PBA competitor, defeated Venezuela's Ildemaro Ruiz to win the PBA Bayer Viper Open. Williams played the lanes perfectly to win 246-194 in the final game.

Sean Rash and Mike Fagen had been eliminated in earlier games.

On Sunday, ESPN will broadcast the USBC Master at 11:30 am. This is another major tournament on the PBA tour. The Masters is open to any USBC sanctioned bowler.
