The Golden Gecko hosts dinner and live comedy the first Saturday of the month. Comedians from around the region visit the venue in the 200 block of Forrest Street.

Eddie Cruz doesn't just want to be a comedian with a microphone. He wants the audience to be comfortable.

"I want everyone to feel like they're in the backyard having a good time," he said.

Crossroads residents will be able to experience his comedy routine in-person.

Cruz will perform Saturday, Feb. 4, for Dinner & Comedy at the Golden Gecko. This will be his second time in Victoria.

"Five minutes in his presence, and you're laughing," said Jodi Sandoval, one of the venue's owners.

The Houston-based comedian enjoys traveling to towns like McAllen and Victoria.

"People are more appreciative of comedy," he said. "It's authentic."

Cruz, who is Mexican, talks about everyday life. His style resonates across racial boundaries.

"I don't have a pamphlet. It's just life," he said.

Cruz has made appearances with comedic legends like Louie Anderson, John Witherspoon and Carlos Mencia. On TV, he's been featured on LOCO Comedy Jam and the Debra Duncan show in Houston.

Cruz, who said he is 21 years old in his heart, does use some profanity in his routine. But the 38-year-old father of two said that language can work for, or against you. He finds a balance.

"I'm not as clean, but I'm not dirty," he said.

Cruz recognized his gift of making people laugh when he was in the fourth grade. He had an unconventional way of making people laugh.

"I invented streaking," he said jokingly.

Although Cruz is naturally funny, he understands the tough side of traveling on the road. "It may take 20 years to get noticed," he said.

It's more important for him to be with his children, Giselle and Manny Cruz.

Working close to home gives Cruz a chance to travel with his wife, Danielle Cruz. His routine is already in place. "I'll make people laugh, and I'll go home," he said.
