Generals inch toward playoff berth with win over Aces

The Victoria Generals moved a step closer to a Texas Collegiate League playoff berth.
The Generals jumped out to a 4-0 lead and went on to a 5-3 win over the Alexandria Aces on Tuesday night at Riverside Stadium.
The Generals improved to 18-9 and could clinch second place and a spot in the postseason with a win over the Aces (12-17) when the teams return to Riverside Stadium on Wednesday at 6 p.m. to complete the two-game series.
The Generals close out the first half of the season on Wednesday and would finish in second place with a win or a loss by the Brazos Valley Bombers, who have three games left to play in the first half.
The East Texas Pump Jacks have wrapped up first place in the first half.
Brandon Tierney put the Generals on top with a two-out, two-run double in the bottom of the first inning. Tierney's double scored Chad Kruse, who had singled, and Eric Weiss who was hit by a pitch.
The Generals added two runs in the second. Jude Vidrine had a RBI single and Weiss was hit by a pitch again, this time with the bases loaded.
Generals starter Bryce Zak pitched five innings to earn the win. He surrendered two runs in the third inning when he yielded a hit, walked two batters and threw two wild pitches.
Alex Klonowski and Dallas Ponder each worked two innings in relief. Ponder struck out three and earned his second save.
The Generals added their fifth run in the fourth on a RBI single by Weiss.
