Southeast Victoria advances in a day of Little League blowouts

July 3, 2012 at 2:03 a.m.

There is always a loser in baseball. Occasionally, the margin of defeat is larger than anyone might prefer.

This was the case Tuesday night when the District 27 Little League baseball tournament continued at the Victoria Youth Sports Complex. Each of the four games in the 11-12 year old tournament was not close as neutrals might have hoped.

Southeast Victoria topped Edna 9-2. Upstart Goliad beat Runge 14-2 to improve to 2-0 in pool play. In the evening doubleheader Southwest Victoria beat Kenedy 14-1.

The Northeast Victoria beat Industrial 11-1 .

"We worked as a team and played hard," said Southeast Victoria leadoff hitter Marquis Hall.

Marquis scored three times to lead his team in their first game of the tournament. He said teammates Juan Sanchez and Jasper Barrios played great defense to help the team hold Edna to just two runs Tuesday evening.

Southeast is a confident bunch that believes they have a chance to win the district tournament. Marquis said that would be possible because "we have talent and we work as a team."

This "Beastside" phenomenon that has embodied sports at Victoria East has filtered down to future Titans as well because Marquis and his teammates like to consider themselves "Baby Beasts."

Some might consider the way Southwest Victoria is hitting the ball quite beastly as well. Through two games in the tournament, they have scored 25 runs. Monday it was the lower half of the order that did the damage; Tuesday the top half of the lineup scored eight runs in the first two innings.

Goliad's Logan Moya and Israel Torres combined to hold Runge to just two runs. Jacob Hahn and Nathaniel Edison were the hitting stars for an All-Star team that was comprised of just two teams in the regular season.

Baseball and Independence Day seem to be woven into the consciousness of this country. Wednesday, the All-Stars from the Crossroads get their chance to enjoy that relationship as the District 27 tournament will have a full slate of elimination games.

In the Area I tournament Karnes County rivals Runge and Karnes City square off, while Kenedy and 2011 District 27 champions Northwest Victoria fight for their tournament lives. In the Area II bracket Edna will play Ganado, while Calhoun will face the loser the Northeast Victoria- Industrial.
