The thought came to her while sitting at church on a Sunday morning.
For Rosetta Bivens, a prayer phone line was the best way to help out and reach the community.
"I feel as if this is my calling," said Bivens.
New Horizon's Church, located on Avenue C and 5th street, started the prayer line in the early 1990s.
The phone lines are open every Tuesday and Thursday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. year long.
"We never ask for names, God knows who you are, we are just here to pray," she said.
Biven said prayer is a vital necessity for everyday life.
"We want to reach out to anyone and everyone who may need or want prayer," she added.
Although they are not there to provide advice or counseling, Biven says they are there to help the person on the other side of the line or a loved one they may want to pray about.
"We sometimes give bible scripture for them to read, it helps them out," she said.
Bivens said people call requesting prayer for family, friends, financial troubles or for strength.
"We pray about whatever they want," she said.
Bivens said this line is important because a lot of times people don't have a church home or a ministry to go to or someone they can go to and pray with.
"Some people may not pray at all," she said. "If they see that there's something available to them that someone can pray with them and let them know prayer change things, we are here for them. Talk is cheap, prayer works," she said.
