A Victoria man was sentenced to 50 years in prison Wednesday after he was found guilty of aggravated sexual assault of a 2-year-old.
Thomas Anderson Hatfield, 23, assaulted the child of his girlfriend in November. The child's mother noticed blood in the girl's diaper and took her to Citizens Medical Center for an examination.
A Department of Public Safety forensic scientist said the diaper contained Hatfield's semen and DNA, according to a news release from the district attorney's office.
In his defense, Hatfield claimed he had accidentally placed semen in the child's diaper while he was changing her and that his knife fell from his pocket and cut her.
The child's mother testified the victim suffered from nightmares for several months after the offense, but is doing better today, according to the news release.
Hatfield is serving an additional 20 years for aggravated assault against the same child.
Hatfield is not eligible for parole for the aggravated sexual assault conviction, according to the release.
