Gathering will celebrate Yoakum's 125 birthday
A cake, punch and ice cream social to celebrate Yoakum's 125 birthday will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the Yoakum Heritage Museum, 312 Simpson St.
The town site of Yoakum was laid out in 1887 and named after Benjamin F. Yoakum, vice president and general manager of the San Antonio and Aransas Pass Railway, according to the Texas Handbook Online.
J. P. Jamieson built a store in 1887 and a post office also opened that year.
The town was incorporated two years later.
Birthday party attendees are encourage to bring lawn chairs.
The museum and Yoakum Area Chamber of Commerce are sponsoring the celebration.
The 2012-13 Miss Yoakum and her court will also be in attendance.
