Aaron Green defeated incumbent Sheriff Gary Mathis for Democratic Party nomination.
He beat Mathis with 54 percent of the vote to Mathis' 46 percent.
"I am just glad it's over," said Green. "I knew it wasn't going to be easy, but we ran a good race."
Green said he plans to go door-to-door for support in November.
"That's the only way I know," he added.
He will face Republican Frank "Skipper" Osborne in the November election.
Green, a retired justice of the peace, said he will have to work to get votes in the November election.
Green's experience includes training hours with the Justice Court Training Center in San Marcos. He obtained an intermediate police certificate and an inactive state jail commission with the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Officer Standards and Education.
Mathis is in his first term as sheriff.
