Local athletes play in THSCA All-Star Game

SAN ANTONIO - Shiloh Whetsel rushed for 1,700 yards and had 650 yards receiving during his senior season as Refugio went 15-0 and won the Class 2A, Division II state championship.

But Whetsel still felt he had something to prove to his South teammates in the Texas High School Coaches Association All-Star Football Game.

"I come from a 2A school and I'm playing with 4A and 5A players now," Whetsel said. "I just want to show everybody that I can play with them."

Whetsel started at running back and kick returner in the South's 30-16 loss on Tuesday night at the Alamodome.

He carried only five times for two yards and did not get a chance to return a kick, but played a good portion of the game.

Whetsel will attend Texas State University on a partial scholarship after turning down offers from out-of-state schools.

"All my offers were from out-of-state," he said. "I really wasn't feeling leaving the state of Texas. That's how that came about."

Whetsel ran behind Edna's Mac Long, who started at left guard.

Long will attend the University of Houston and is expected to move to center.

"They told me to practice snapping," Long said. "You've got to know all the fronts and everything. You've got to do two things at once. You've got to snap and step."

Cuero's Colton Jacob played defensive end for the South and had two tackles, but will be playing tight end at Mary Hardin Baylor.

"To me it's football," Jacob said. "I love playing it and happy to play anywhere.

It's just getting a little bit bigger, stronger and catching."

Landon Lock will play middle linebacker at Eastern New Mexico, the same position he played at Gonzales.

But Lock played outside linebacker for the South and was third on the team with five tackles, including one for a loss.

"I may be one of the smallest linebackers," Lock said, "but I want to show people I belong in this game."

The North's Avian Edwards from Stephenville, who rushed for 74 yards, was the offensive MVP and the North's Lance

Duran from Austin Westlake, who had 2.5 tackles and recovered a fumble, was the defensive MVP.
