King beats Texas Rep. Landtroop in District 88

CANADIAN (AP) - Canadian school board president Ken King has defeated Texas state Rep. Jim Landtroop for the Republican nomination for House District 88.

King, in his rookie campaign for state office, defeated an incumbent who had received endorsements from several top Republicans, including Gov. Rick Perry and state Agriculture Commissioner Todd Staples.

Landtroop had to run for re-election in a district that was drastically redrawn from the one that elected him in 2010. District 88 now covers 17 counties to the northern tip of the Panhandle.

The nomination all but clears the way to the state Capitol for King, who does not face a Democrat opponent in the November general election.
