Rep. Gallego gets Dems' nod for US House

SAN ANTONIO (AP) - State Rep. Pete Gallego has defeated former U.S. Rep. Ciro Rodriguez for the Democratic nomination to represent the 23rd Congressional District in southwest Texas.

Gallego will now face Republican incumbent U.S. Rep. Quico Canseco in November.

The race between Gallego and Canseco will be one of the fiercest in the nation as Democrats try to retake control of Congress. Redistricting left Canseco in a district that should favor Democrats.

Gallego was favored to win the Democratic nomination, raising more money and endorsements than Rodriguez. Gallego lives in Alpine and has represented much of the district in the Legislature since 1991.
