Editor's note: Advocate reporter J.R. Ortega, a True Blood fan, gives the skinny on how he views the show and who he thinks will have a big presence in Season 5.
Ah, the whole reason we watch the show. Ever since episode 1, we learn how Sookie can read minds. And if you've been keeping up with the series, you learn that this go-getter-want-to-help-everyone girl has some fairy in her.
Since the first episode, this mysterious vampire came into our lives. OK, he actually came into Merlotte's Bar and Grill in Bon Temp, La. He's taken hold of our sweet Sookie Stackhouse and has easily swept her off her feet for four seasons. His attraction to Sookie is something we're still learning about. I have a feeling they'll be stringing us along well past season 5.
Forget tall, dark and handsome; let's talk tall, pale and handsome - that's Eric in a nutshell. Eric is a manipulative, smooth-talking 1,000-year-old Nordic vampire who many trubies fell in love with. But behind those deep, glamorous eyes is a vampire whose motives we still don't fully understand.
Four words for our very vocal diva Tara: Please don't be dead. Tara is Sookie Stackhouse's no-nonsense best friend whose being shot left us with a real season 4 cliffhanger. She also hates vampires. Our guess - Tara will be saved by guess who - a fanger. What will that do to her? Will she owe her life to the vampire or would she rather be dead?
This fire-red-haired Merlotte's waitress just can't get away from the supernatural. First, her deceased husband, Rene, ends up being a serial killer. Then, in season 3, she finds out she's pregnant with his kid, and thinks the child may be evil. Throughout season 4, this child has some mysterious powers, and we're not quite sure if he's just a normal infant, or if our little redhead has finally lost it.
Yet another one who is in love with Miss Sookie Stackhouse. Sam Merlotte owns the popular Merlotte's Bar and Grill in Bon Temps, La., and when he isn't dealing with the crazy vampire going ons around town, he's dealing with himself. But Sam has his own problems. He's a shapeshifter with a broken family past.
This is proof that what's dead doesn't always stay buried. At the end of season 3, Bill Compton and Eric Northman bury Russell Edgington. Of course, at the end of season 4, we see Russell is no longer buried in cement and silver. Edgington is a fabulous vampire extremist who always wants to get his way.
Awooooo, do us trubies love you. This washboard ab werewolf was introduced in season 3 and obviously is madly in love with Sookie Stackhouse (Yes, another one). Alcide is always there to help Sookie and is also a smooth talker. Who knows what's in store for Alcide, as long as he's there.
Rude, callous, yet somewhat sensitive, Andy Bellefleur definitely stands out. This police detective is a drinker, and so many times you wonder, "What's his point? How will he somewhat become entwined in the supernatural?
Calm yourself, Lafayette ain't going nowhere. Who would have ever thought anything would have come of Lafayette, the fabulously flamboyant Merlotte's chef. Lafayette is Tara Thornton's cousin, and we can't help but love them both when they are on camera together. But what will come of Lafayette in Season 5?
