After walking more than 3,740 miles this school year in the Dow Walking Program, Seadrift School students recently teamed up with Dow Chemical employee volunteers to celebrate the successful completion of their program with pizza and prizes.
Special recognition was given to the Seadrift School students and the class groups who walked the most miles. Every student who participated received a certificate and was entered into a grand prize drawing for water park and movie theater tickets.
Top prizes were awarded to, Caleb Aguilar, who won four Schlitterbahn tickets and a gas card; Kirk Stringham, who won four movie tickets to Twin Dolphins Theater and snack packs; and Ty Boedecker, who won four movie tickets to Twin Dolphins Theater.
The Seadrift School walking program was a Dow volunteer-led effort to interact with local students while giving them the opportunity to exercise during their lunch recess.
"I am extremely proud of the success of this year's program," said Dow's Steven Bis, who initiated the walking program with Seadrift School Principal Dwana Finster.
The program was coordinated along the theme of "Walk Texas" where for every mile walked, the school progressed along a pre-routed map of Texas historical landmarks, like the Alamo in San Antonio.
"The kids started the year with a goal of walking one lap around Texas, and by the time the program concluded, they had walked the entire loop and were halfway around their second loop," Bis said.
