Wrecks slow traffic on US 77 in Refugio County

Refugio County law enforcement officials saw two wrecks Thursday morning after a truck carrying oil field equipment struck a railroad overpass north of Refugio, the sheriff's office said.

Refugio County Chief Deputy Sheriff Sheldon Wiginton said the two wrecks occurred within 90 minutes of each other.

The first wreck occurred about 7:45 a.m. in the northbound lane of U.S. Highway 77 at the Union Pacific Railroad overpass. The second occurred about 9:15 a.m. in the southbound lane of that highway as crews assessed the bridge from the initial wreck.

Wiginton said there were no fatalities, but did not know whether the second wreck involved any injuries.

Texas Department of Public Safety troopers investigated the two wrecks.

Traffic was slowed to one lane as officials cleared the scene.
