Victoria's Roman Madrid had a 1.00 ERA in 32 games for the Central Florida Knights this year with 46 strikeouts.

SLOTTED BONUSES

MLB assigns a pay scale to the bonuses players drafted can receive, all based on percentages of the top slot's value, for the first 10 rounds of the draft.

1st pick overall: $7.2 million

2nd pick overall: 6.2 million

7th round, 225 overall: $148.300

Roman Madrid spent the spring of 2012 helping Central Florida earn a berth in the NCAA tournament.

And he's turned it into a chance at the big leagues.

The former Memorial pitcher has signed with the San Diego Padres, confirmed Josh Isho, the team's coordinator of media relations.

Madrid was drafted last week by the Padres in the seventh round with the 225th overall pick.

Signing also could come with a a pretty substantial payday with it for Madrid.

Baseball America listed the slot value - the amount in bonus money Major League Baseball has assigned that pick - at $148,300, or about 2 percent of the bonus for the top overall pick's assigned value of just over $7 million.

The Memorial alum started his collegiate career at A&M-Corpus Christi before moving on to McLennan Community College in 2011 and the University of Central Florida in 2012.

As a junior, Madrid appeared in 32 games for the Knights and posted a 5-2 record with a 1.00 ERA, 46 strikeouts and three saves.

He held opposition batters to a .218 batting average.

Madrid played for the Victoria Generals for two seasons and was a part of the 2010 Texas Collegiate League Championship team.

Last year, he pitched 11 1/3 innings for the Genrals and posted a 7-0 record with 14 strikeouts and a 7.94 ERA.

This is the second time Madrid has been an MLB draft pick. In 2009, the Cleveland Indians drafted Madrid in the 44th round to play catcher. He chose not to sign.

If Madrid makes it to the Double-A level, he would play for the San Antonio Missions of the Texas League.
