As the November election draws near, the political parties are preparing to nominate their candidate to run for President of the United States.
In August, 2,286 people from across the country will represent their states at the Republican National Convention. Calhoun County Republican Party Chairman Russell Cain has been elected as one of the delegates.
The convention is slated for Aug. 27-30 in Tampa, Fla. When Republican delegates cast their votes to choose their nominee, Cain will be there to cast his vote, one of about 100 Texas Republicans selected to attend the event.
He will be one of the delegates representing Congressional District 27. Cain was chosen by vote after three ballots were cast, choosing who would go among 216 delegates from the district.
"I'm just elated about the whole process, and I'm so thankful that I have been chosen," Cain said. "I will represent the county and the state and do what I'm elected to do."
Cain has been a resident of Port Lavaca for 56 years and has acted as Republican chairman for the past five years. This is his first time to be elected as a representative to the national convention.
Cain said he is thrilled by the honor.
"It's great just to have a place in history like this," he said. "It's amazing knowing that you're actually going to affect where America goes and who our next president will be."
