Dennis Smith spends months away from home for work as a shot hole driller. Sunday morning he will leave for another work trip.
The Nursery resident had the pleasure to be with his granddaughter from Goliad.
They shot bow and arrows, watched TV and read books.
And on Saturday, the two discovered what it's like to ride in style.
"I've never been in a limo. This is nice," said 8-year-old Elicia Smith. "I haven't been in a limo either, but I prefer to drive myself," said the grandfather of four.
The Smiths were able to enjoy each other's company through Daddy-Daughter Date Night.
Chick-fil-A in the Victoria Mall rolled out the red carpet, literally for their 125 guests. The total was divided into three one-hour sessions.
A group of volunteers played the Disney classic "Be Our Guest," on woodwind instruments.
Others greeted the participants with pink carnations and boutonnieres.
Each table had place cards and floral centerpieces. The placemats magenta and blue placemats offered conversation starters.
People were served with their choice of kid's meals and chicken sandwiches.
After the meal, the families were surprised with a limosine ride and photo opportunity.
Some mothers made earnest attempts to join in on the fun on the brink of Father's Day. They were turned away with a smile.
Store owner David Murphy said he wanted to create a memorable event for the guests.
"You have to create those moments with your daughter," said Murphy, a father of two.
He hopes this type of event is the first of many.
"They made a nice little spread for us. Plus the nuggets are always a hit," said John Cuellar, who took his 5-year-old daughter Reese Cuellar.
The two went shopping to buy a gift for Cuellar's dad. His oldest daughter, Reese, used her creativity to make her Father's Day present.
The doting grandfather said, "My favorite part of the day was spending time with LuLu (Elicia)," he said.
"My favorite part was riding in the limo," Elicia responded.
