During the June 12th city council meeting, it was announced that the City of Victoria intends to build this year's budget around the effective tax rate. If council adopts the effective tax rate, that means that the average Victoria taxpayer would have no increase in the amount of property taxes they paid over last year. For many years, I have been encouraging council to adopt the effective tax rate. It is rewarding to see them finally warming up to this idea. While this cannot be called "tax relief" because it is revenue neutral, it is a step in the right direction. I, for one, will support this effort and encourage all the council to do the same.
