City Corner column: City replacing old water meters with new more efficient ones

Why is the city replacing its water meter system with an automated meter system?

The city's water meters are based on a manual reading system, which is inefficient and costly. Therefore, the city is replacing the system with an Automated Metering System. The new system provides residents with several benefits, including:•  More accurate meter reads

•  Improved security and tamper detection

•  Improved leak protection

•  Increased efficiency

•  Reduced operations and maintenance costs

•  Improved customer service and data collections.

In the next several weeks, city residents and commercial businesses will start seeing work crews installing the new automatic meter readers. This citywide meter system improvement project includes the installation of 23,000 automatic meters.

The project will take about five months to complete and the city wants residents to be aware of the pending installations. Meter installation is scheduled to begin on or around July 30 with anticipated completion on or around Jan. 18.

An outside contractor, U.S. Bronco, will install the new meters. Work crews will be in their company trucks and will have individual identification cards.

Installations take about nine minutes and water will be turned off momentarily while the meters are being installed.

I have a few large items that I need to dispose of, including a sofa and a washing machine. I am also planning to trim my trees and will need the limbs picked up. Will the city's Solid Waste Department pick up the items from my curb?

Yes. You must contact the city's Solid Waste Department at 361-485-3220 to schedule a pick-up for your large residential items, including furniture, appliances and minor construction debris.

The large item pick-up is part of the water/garbage service that residents in the city limits pay for and residents are allowed two large item pick-ups per year. Items measuring over 6 cubic yards (4 feet x 4 feet x 10 feet) will incur a $1.50 per minute fee. If you request more than two large item pick-ups during the year, you will be charged a $20 service fee plus a $1.50 per minute fee.

Tree limbs are picked up on a quarterly schedule throughout the year. Before cutting your limbs, please check the collection schedule available on the city's website. Visit victoriatx.org/ environmental/treelimbs.asp for a map of your residential area and then consult the quarterly collection schedule to find out when city crews will be in your area picking up limbs. This will help prevent residents from having large bundles of limbs sitting out on their curb for extended amounts of time. Everything over 6 cubic yards (4 feet x 4 feet x 10 feet) will incur a $1.50 per minute fee and if you need to schedule a limb pick-up outside of the quarterly pick-up schedule, there will be a $20 service fee.

If they will fit, you can also place tree limbs and yard waste in old trash cans or brown paper lawn bags out by the curb and they will be picked up on the same day as your regular trash pick-up.
