Appelt family hosts reunion at Appelt's Hill Hall
The 48th Appelt Reunion was June 3 at Appelt's Hill Hall in Hallettsville. About 135 people enjoyed a lunch of stew and sausage, along with side dishes and desserts brought by the members. President Otto "Buddy" Brogger expressed appreciation to the many members who worked to make the reunion a success. Those taking the lead in the various activities were Larry Svetlik, stew and sausage crew; Susan Gilbert, kitchen crew; Hilmer and Margaret Appelt, prize team; Pam Reinhart, Appelt family genealogist; and Robert Mertz, children's activities. Howard Appelt was wished a happy birthday as he celebrated his 89th birthday at the reunion
Veterans were recognized for their service to our country. The veterans gathered at the U.S. flag at the north entrance of the hall as members recited the Pledge of Allegiance.
Appelt family members who passed away since the last reunion were remembered with a moment of silence: Joe Strauss, of Shiner, age 87; Louis Howard Sommer, of San Antonio, age 80; Keith R. Startz, of Spring, age 45; Bobbie Jean Appelt, of Hallettsville, age 52; Helen M. Appelt, of Hallettsville, age 84; Frank J. Matula, of Hallettsville, age 93; Rhonda Marie Appelt, of San Antonio, age 59; Leon "Red" Kahanek, of Hallettsville, age 80.
The oldest member present was Victoria Orsak, of Schulenburg, age 94. The youngest member present was Garrett Lloyd, age 21 months, son of Mark and Lisa Lloyd, of Hempstead. James and Mae Rother, of Hallettsville, were married the longest time at 59 years, and Ryan and Tiffanie Mertz, of Alvin, were married the shortest time at 1 ½ months. The largest family present was the Ann Birkner family with 35 members attending. Ruth Gilchrist and grandson Garrett Gilchrist, of Alexandria, La., traveled the farthest at 350 miles. First time in attendance was Betty Keller McMillen. Door prizes were given in memory of Marie Holy.
Next year's reunion will be at Appelt's Hill Hall on the first Sunday in June. Members were asked to consider celebration ideas for the 50th reunion slated for 2014.
