Dispute is about freedom to practice religion

June 29, 2012 at 1:29 a.m.

Editor, the Advocate:

The current dispute between the Catholic church and President Obama's government is not about birth control. It is about religious liberty, the same religious liberty that was instrumental in the founding of this nation.

It is a principle of the church's faith that birth control and abortion are contrary to the faith. Therefore, when the government tells the church that insurance coverage provided to employees must include birth control and abortion, the government is forcing the church to violate a principle of its faith.

If the government can force the Catholic church to violate its faith, it can force others to do the same. The government might decide that all churches must use wine in a communion service. The government might decide that your church services must be on Friday. The government might dictate the hymns for your church services.

The church is fighting for religious liberty in the United States. If she loses, the government might appoint your next pastor!

Protect religious freedom. Join the discussion. Tell the Obama government to stay out of religion.
