Art Corner: Digital photography, pottery classes offered

The classes I mentioned in last month's column are upon us. Pottery, stained glass and advanced photography will all be offered this month, along with ongoing children's classes.

First to start up will be Jim Feig's advanced digital photography class on Thursdays starting July 5. This class will be for those who have taken Jim's beginning class or for those who have experience with the digital camera but want to learn more. Cost is $80. Contact him at 361-576-0578 if interested or need more information.

Next, William Vickery will offer a stained glass class from 10 a.m. to noon starting July 7 and continuing for five consecutive Saturdays until Aug. 4. Cost is $100. Try something new and different by contacting him at 361-235-2416.

Then starting July 16, I will teach a two-week workshop for beginners in pottery. We will meet for four days for instruction and building, then be off for six days for the pottery to dry and be fired and meet again to glaze your projects, off another day to glaze fire them and then meet for our final class. Two classes will be offered, one from 1 to 4 p.m. and another from 6 to 9 p.m.

Also for those who have taken the beginners class or already have pottery experience, I will offer a follow up class from 9 a.m. to noon on the same days. All classes will be $125 for six three hour sessions, which includes all materials and supplies. Contact me at 361-575-3216 or 361-649-8309 if you have questions about any of these.

Michele Evans still has openings for children's art classes. So if your child or grandchild needs "something to do," give her a call at 361-572-8093.

All in all, it's a busy time here at your community art league. Plug in and enjoy your creative side.

Sonny Timme has had some health problems and has had to put his classes on hold for a while. He hopes to resume teaching in September if he is able.

You might drop him a line and wish him well.

Besides having art experiences, a number of us have been renovating our historic facility. The classroom has been gutted and a new subfloor installed with new laminate flooring to be installed shortly. Home Depot helped with donating some lumber and some employees have volunteered to lay the flooring. What a change this will be and so much easier to clean with all the activities going on in that room.

The back staircases are complete and it is nice to know that each side is sturdy, safe, and aesthetically pleasing to the eye. Come by and visit us to see our progress and view the paintings in our gallery.

We have so many people to thank from our membership and from you, our community supporters. We could not do this without your many donations to our building fund.

Also, many businesses and some grants keep us moving forward on our continuing restoration. Thank you all so very, very much.

Sidney Johnston will be our artist of the month for July. Again, come visit and see a special display of his work in the gallery. Sidney is an example of someone who had become disabled by a stroke but is overcoming this by use of painting. We are very proud of him and his accomplishments.

There will be a reception for him at 2 p.m. on Sunday, July 8, before our monthly meeting at 2:30 p.m.

Renie Patty, from Rockport, will be our demo artist for the month. Her demo is titled "Water Reflections in a Landscape Painting." You won't want to miss this. We hope to see many of our members as well as you at this meeting. You know that you are always welcome at the Victoria Art League anytime.

Remember, our hours are 1 to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. Hope to see you soon.

Bill Bauer is president of the Victoria Art League.
