Hey, Victoria. Spring is fast approaching and everything is starting to bloom.
We would like you to blossom and show what you've got at our annual Spring Art Show at the Victoria Art League this month.
We will be accepting entries from 1 to 7 p.m. March 22 and 1 to 6 p.m. March 23.
There is a show for youth as well as adults with cash prizes in the various categories.
This is your time to shine and strut your stuff, so get busy and get ready for this opportunity to share your talent with others.
Parents, really encourage your children to create something in whatever media they like and to participate in this show. We will open the show with an awards presentation from 2 to 4 p.m. March 25 in the Victoria Art League Gallery at 905 S. Bridge St.
The show will hang in the Victoria Art League gallery through April 6. For a complete list of rules and entry forms, come by or contact the Art League at 361-572-0825.
I wrote in my last newsletter that you didn't want to miss our monthly meeting with Mark Keathley demonstrating painting in oils and, boy, was I right.
If you missed it, you really missed something special. Mark painted, in just an hour and a half, a 30-by-40-inch Indian on horseback that was so interesting and inspirational to watch.
Every stroke seemed so casual but the painting came together so quickly while he was explaining what he was doing. I wish all of you could have seen it.
I continue to encourage all of you interested in the visual arts to come join one of our classes or workshops that interest you.
Lem Smith will teach a three-day workshop in April on woodcarving. He is very skilled in what he does while patiently showing and helping each person in this special art form.
I plan to take his workshop also.
If you are interested in finding out more about Smith's workshop, contact the Art League or call Lem at 361-573-5944.
Our monthly meeting will be March 11 and Paula Kainer will demonstrate in watercolor.
This will be an inspiration to those of you who will be thinking of renewing your interest in a medium or that might want to try a new one.
She tried a new one a few years ago after her kids grew up and now, it seems to me, is recognized in most shows she enters.
Our artist of the month for this month will be Marilyn Key and we will have a reception for her at 2 p.m. before the meeting.
Come see the display of her work in the gallery and meet and visit with her. She has studied all over the U.S. and is a very accomplished oil painter.
Fred James' work will be on display until March 11 and Key's will be exhibited until our next meeting.
Since Easter falls on the same day as our monthly meeting, the second Sunday of each month, we have moved our meeting day in April to April 15.
Lem will demonstrate for that meeting.
Jim Feig will offer a beginning digital photography class March 20, meeting each Tuesday until April 10. The time is from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m.
If you're interested or need more information, contact Feig at 361-576-0578.
If you want to get back into or try a new medium, contact Sonny Timme at 361-578-8722 and he will get you going.
If you have a youngster who would like an art experience, contact Michele Evans at 361-572-8093.
As you can see, I am setting an example of experiencing different art forms so I invite you to do the same. Now is the time to grow and mature that special talent each of us has within.
