The Victoria Business and Education Coalition is honoring mentors and students who participate in the Helping One Student To Succeed program in Victoria schools.

This week's honorary student is Johnesshia Franklin, a third-grader at Hopkins Academy, who teachers say has gained pride and confidence thanks to HOSTS.

What do you like about being connected to a mentor in the community?

They come all the way over here to help, and that shows they care about you, and that means a lot.

What ways has this program helped you?

It has helped me learn reading, how to spell and sound out words. My work has improved because of my mentors. Since they have already been to school, they know what it takes to be a good student, and they show me how to be one too.
