DPS seizes $470,895 in drug money

Almost half a million dollars were discovered by DPS troopers on U.S. Highway 59 near Lake Texana.

The Texas Highway Patrol stopped a southbound 2007 Pontiac G5 for a traffic violation but ended up with nearly half a million dollars in drug money, according to Senior Trooper Gerald Lee Bryant with the Texas Department of Public Safety.

The stop was made about 1:05 p.m. Monday on U.S. Highway 59 near Lake Texana in Jackson County.

During the stop, the trooper observed several signs of criminal activity and obtained a verbal consent to search the vehicle.

The trooper located a a duffle bag in the truck of the car. Upon opening the bag, $470,895.00 was discovered.

The driver of the vehicle, Jose Munoz Roque, 44, from Mercedes, was arrested and faces charges of first degree felony money laundering.

He was taken to the Jackson County Sheriff's jail.
