Steve Dickinson has been overshadowed most of the year by other bowlers earning the headlines on weekly high scores, but, as the Victoria City Open Tournament draws near, the defending champion's game has ramped up.

Christine Speer has also demonstrated her ability to score with an excellent 268 high game, contributing towards the women's week high 662 series.

Speer added scores of 192 and 202 during Sugar & Spice competition for her big total.

During Sundowner League pin action, Dickinson was masterful with games of 278, 289, and 246 contributing towards a USBC award-winning 813 series. He started the second game with 10 strikes before a 9-pin count on the 11th ball stopped his bid for a 300 game.

This was Dickinson's 10th career 800 set, and he also rolled a 686 in another league for another good week on the lanes.

Mike Osterson posted the second high set with a great 277 game, contributing towards a 738.

Ray Polensky and Ron Gabrysch tied for the third high total with sets of 697. Gabrysch rolled a 279 high game in his total, and Polensky posted a 249 high.

Other scores of note for the men were Abel Garcia (691/652), Mike Wortham (690), Kenny Schupbach (681), Shawn Miller (673), Cory O'Brien (267-672), Miles Michalec (669), Justin Tweedle (257-665), Robert Pfeil (266-665), Randy Vivero (661), Tom Crowe (268-659), Brian Hyden (255-654), John Figueroa (267-651), Steve Zeplin (259-649), Darryl Mergele (266), Glenn Pitts (265), Abraham Flores (258), Duane Hayward (254), and John Rodriguez (253).

Carri Lee was also on target for the women with a 235 game and 639 total. Lori Heil broke the 600 mark with a 228 game, helping towards a 603 set.

Trudy Wortham, with a 584 set, and Jesseca Thomas, with a great 256 game, scored well.

Vera Cruz Restaurant bowlers for the week were Steve Dickinson (813, Sundowners) and Rebekah Martinez (699, Monday Mixed).

A couple of weeks ago, Pete Weber won the most challenging major title in bowling - the U.S. Open - for a record fifth time. He moved ahead of two bowling icons, Don Carter and his dad Dick Weber, who have four Open titles.

The final game against Mike Fagan went down to the last ball with Weber needing a strike on the last ball for a 215-214 victory.

While we can admire P.D.W.'s bowling greatness, his behavior towards some fans in the audience leaves a lot to be desired.

Jason Belmonte (Austraila) defeated Chris Barnes 243-213 in last week's GEICO Shark Open for his second World Series of Bowling title in three weeks.

Barnes was coming off a 300 game when he entered the final game. He matched Belmonte with strikes for the first three frames before three straight 10 pin leaves and a 7-10 split derailed his chances.

The next television broadcast of the PBA Tour will be on March 25 at 1:30 p.m. on ESPN for the Mark Roth-Marshall Holman PBA Doubles Championship.
