The grounds of Mitchell Guidance Center will transform into an early 1800s encampment at the Texas Our Texas celebration Saturday.

The community is invited to see heritage organizations displaying artifacts and skills unique to Texas' history and in remembrance of the state's independence.

"I had a couple kids last year and even teachers say this is like Texas history come to life," said Paige Gedvillas, interim director of the Children's Discovery Museum of the Golden Crescent.

Almost 1,200 students are expected to take field trips to the event on Thursday and Friday, which will feature music, campsites, re-enactors, Badland Texas Rangers, Buffalo Soldiers, Texas Camel Corps, pioneer men and women, American Indians, cowboys and more.

The museum has put on the event in the past several years, mostly thanks to grants and money raised at the celebration.

Gedvillas said the Texas Our Texas event is not only entertainment, but also serves as an educational supplement to what students are learning about Texas history in classrooms.

"To actually have a person who looks like they came out of 1836, standing there with all the tools they use . it has much more an effect on you than if you just read it out of a book. You're certainly going to remember" it, she said.

For a discount price, families also can visit the Children's Discovery Museum along with the Texas Our Texas show on Saturday.
