I'm interested in a health care career, but I need to get started working pretty quickly. Is there anything I can train for that won't take two years before I can start working?
Absolutely, Victoria College's Workforce and Continuing Education Department offers a number of courses that can get you started working quickly.
You may be interested in training to become a long-term care activity director. Activity directors typically work in long-term care facilities and skilled nursing units of acute care facilities planning activities and therapeutic activities.
In as little as about two-and-a-half months, you could complete the Long-Term Care Activity Director I class and start working as an activity director. This class requires 90 hours of classroom instruction and 112 hours of clinical experience. Classes are held from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and you can complete your clinical requirement as part of your current employment.
Curriculum included in Long-Term Care Activity Director classes includes regulations, communications, advocacy, ethics, service delivery and volunteer management. When you combine both Long-Term Care Activity Director I and II classes with the "Practicum-Gerontology" clinical requirement, you will meet the state requirement to take the state activity directing certification exam.
The curriculum and clinical experience offered at VC for Long-Term Care Activity Director is designed to prepare you for success on the certification exam.
To get started in your Long-Term Care Activity Director classes, you will need a high school diploma or GED, valid immunizations, including TB and the Hepatitis B series, and you will need to have some work experience in health care within the past year. Tuition for both Long-Term Care Activity Director I is $350. Tuition assistance is available through VC's Financial Aid Office.

Long-Term Care Activity Director classes, along with other non-credit health care career classes, are also offered at the VC Gonzales Center once per year on a rotating basis. Please check the website for details on when classes are offered in Gonzales.
