Food service inspections

The Victoria City-County Health Department Environmental Health Division inspects places where food is served in Victoria, DeWitt, Jackson and Calhoun Counties.

In the inspection reports, each violation in the Food Temperature/Time Requirements category is 5 demerits; in the Personnel/Handling/Source Requirements category, 4 demerits; and in the Facility and Equipment Requirements, 3 demerits. Zero is a perfect score, while 100 demerits is the worst possible score.

Each Wednesday, the Advocate publishes inspection results from the previous week. All demerits are reported, but only those in the categories of Food Temperature/Time Requirements and Personnel/Handling/Source Requirements are detailed.



FOOD SERVICE INSPECTIONS FOR WEEK ENDING MARCH 9

Dragon House, 202 S. Highway 77-A, Yoakum. Demerits: 34. Cannot keep cooled foods prepared in advance for lunch out of temperature. Need to follow proper cooling procedures, or keep hot or cold. May also use the four-hour rule. Improper cold hold temperature. Wash hands before touching clean plates; use hand washing sink for hand washing only. Employee drinks should be in spill-proof containers, stored below food contact surfaces. Keep raw meat below vegetables in coolers. Flies in the kitchen. Four facility or equipment violations.

Mexico Tipico, 421 N. Virginia St., Port Lavaca. Demerits: 28. Improper cold hold temperature. Wash hands in between tasks. Hand sink for hand washing only; do not store items in it. Cover food in walk-in cooler and freezer. No bare-hand contact with tortillas. Date label food with seven-day use-by date. One facility or equipment violation.

Bayside Seafood Restaurant, 2055 state Highway 35 N., Port Lavaca. Demerits: 21. Discard unsound/contaminated bag of nuts. Don't store uncovered salads on top of each other. Need to date label food in walk-in cooler. Remove contaminated packages and rodent droppings in dry storage area. Need to wash, rinse and sanitize all dishes. Three facility or equipment violations.

Taqueria Vallarta, 1706 N. Laurent St., Victoria. Demerits: 16. Keep food covered in walk-in and freezers. Four facility or equipment violations.

Miss P's Sweet Ice Tea and Sandwiches, 4496 Cheapside Road, Westoff. Demerits: 15. Wash hands before putting on gloves. Wear gloves with ready-to-eat foods. Hot water must stay on. Two facility or equipment violations.

Partymix, 26 Market St., Bloomington. Demerits: 11. Improper cold hold temperature. Wastewater cannot be discharged onto the ground. Need to have holding tank connected. Need to screen doorway, if door is going to be kept open. Two facility or equipment violations.

Taqueria El Huasteco, 103 E. 2nd St., Bloomington. Demerits: 11. Keep raw meat below cooked meats and vegetables. Date label cooked meats, salsa, and cut vegetables if not consumed within 24 hours. Table top not working. Use four-hour rule on items on top of cooler. One facility or equipment violation.

Ruby's Diner, 310 S. Esplanade St., Cuero. Demerits: 11. Wash hands between tasks, between handling dirty dishes and clean dishes. Wash hands before putting on gloves. Wash hands and wear gloves when handling cut lemons, rolls or any ready-to-eat foods. One facility or equipment violation.

La Familia Cafe, 503 W. Main St., Port Lavaca. Demerits: 11. Store raw meat below other food. Date label food with seven-day use-by date. Must wash, rinse and sanitize all dishes. One facility or equipment violation.

Shellfish Sports Bar and Grille, 2615 N. Highway 35, Port Lavaca. Demerits: 11. Wear gloves when cutting tomatoes. Store raw meat below other food. One facility or equipment violation.

Dollar General Store No. 11674, 5780 S.W. Moody St., Victoria. Demerits: 10. Could not get hot water in restrooms. Two facility or equipment violations.

Andy's Quick Stop, 312 W. Heaton St., Cuero. Demerits: 8. Out of date medication. Need to use gloves with ready-to-eat foods.

Taqueria Express, 1001 U.S. Highway 77-A, Yoakum. Demerits: 8. Improper cold hold temperature. One facility or equipment violation.

The Donut Palace, 310 N. Esplanade St., Cuero. Demerits: 7. Improper cold hold temperature. Employees needs to use good hygienic practices.

Jocelynn's, 17 Elizabeth Lane, Port O'Connor. Demerits: 6. Two facility or equipment violations.

Main Street Kaffee Haus and Deli, 104 E. Main St., Cuero. Demerits: 4. Date label items in cooler.

Westhoff Independent School District, 244 Lynch Ave., Westoff. Demerits: 4. Out-of-date yogurt.

Harley's, 300 N. Highway 77-A, Yoakum. Demerits: 4. Keep raw chicken stored below raw beef in walk-in cooler. Repair faucet in women's restroom. One facility or equipment violation.

Club Beauty In-N-Out, 521 N. Virginia St., Suite B, Port Lavaca; Community Action Committee of Victoria, 292 Foster Field Drive, Victoria; Torres Grocery Store, 370 Proctor St., Westoff. Demerits: 3.

Cuero Community Hospital, 2550 N. Esplanade St., Cuero; John C. French Elementary School Cafeteria, 505 N. Henry St., Cuero; Hunt Elementary School, 805 N. Hunt St., Cuero; K and N Rootbeer Drive Inn, 514 E. Broadway St., Cuero; New Beginnings, 105 Ward St., Cuero; St. Michael's Parish, 108 N. McLeod St., Cuero; The Barbecue Station, 114 S. Esplanade St., Cuero; Industrial Little League, 363 Kolle St., Inez; Beacon 44 Seafood, 1410 W. RE-INSPECTIONS

Partymix, 26 Market St., Bloomington, inspected March 1 with 11 demerits. Re-inspected March 6, all violations corrected.

Taqueria El Rodeo 2 By 2, 1928 Main St., Port Lavaca, inspected Jan. 26 with 36 demerits. Re-inspected March 6, nothing is being stored in walk-in cooler. Need to call health department when walk-in is fixed before they can use it.

Cracker Barrel No. 1, 112 Sam Houston Drive, Victoria, inspected Jan. 27 with 36 demerits. Re-inspected March 6, with violations corrected. Continuing to work on date labeling ready-to-eat packaged sandwiches and burritos.

Speedy Stop No. 81, 6490 Farm to Market Road 236, Victoria, inspected Feb. 22 with 12 demerits. Re-inspected March 6, all violations corrected.

I Stop No. 4, 611 N. Highway 77-A, Yoakum, inspected Feb. 1 with 27 demerits. Re-inspected March 7, with most violations corrected. Continuing to work on labeling bags of ice, and date labeling ready-to-eat foods with a seven-day use-by date.
