Meet Calhoun County's spelling bee co-champions

PRIZES

First place: All-expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C. to participate in the National Spelling Bee competition sponsored by Victoria Advocate; Webster's Third New International Dictionary (donated by Merriam-Webster); Samuel Louis Sugarman Award Certificate - valued at approximately $50 (donated by Mr. Jay Sugarman in honor of his father); One-year subscription to Encyclopedia Britannica Online (donated by Encyclopedia Britannica); Valerie Supplement (donated by Hexco)

Twelve spellers from around the Crossroads are prepared to wage war over words for the chance to be crowned the 2012 Regional Spelling Bee Champion.

Each day, we'll feature, in all their glory, the co-champions from participating counties.

Today's co-champions are from Calhoun County - Shaughnessy Jean Howell and Blaine Matthew Schmidt, both from Travis Middle School.

The Regional Spelling Bee premieres at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Victoria College's Johnson Symposium, 2200 E. Red River St.
