A Victoria County man was sentenced on Thursday to five years in prison after a jury found him guilty of failing to comply with sex offender registration requirements.

On Wednesday, a jury found Jonathan Paul Veliz, 44, guilty of the offense.

Testimony showed Veliz changed his address without notifying local law enforcement within seven days, as required, said Victoria County Assistant Criminal District Attorney Brian Hrach, who prosecuted the case.

The jury's decision was based in large part upon the testimony of the woman he sexually assaulted in 1995 when she was 5 years old, according to the news release.

Veliz was placed on probation for that offense in 1996.

"Mr. Veliz was given a chance in 1996 with probation to change himself, and he still refuses to follow the rules to this day," said Victoria County District Attorney Steve Tyler.
