  • And let me be clear that I mean no disrespect to anyone suffering from PTSD. It's a horrible affliction. I've just read too many accounts of PTSD not being a healthy match for police work (for the officer and citizens), and many LE agencies have a screening process. Police work isn't conducive to healing.

  • There's always a catch. I hope they have a good screening policy for PTSD:
"The new hires must be military veterans, who served on active duty for at least 180 days since Sept. 11, 2001."

Does this account for the City's officers?:
"The national standard is to have two deputies per 1,000 residents, he said. The sheriff's office has 30 deputies to Victoria County's population, about 90,000."

This whole thing sounds like the COPS program the VPD bought into in 2010. Although, they got in before the vet requirement.
    From the City's 2011 CAFR:
"Public Safety - The Police Department was awarded a 2010 Community Oriented Policing Services Hiring Recovery Program Grant (COPS) which will pay for 5 full-time police officers for up to 3 years at a total cost of approximately $941,215 or $313,738 per year. At the end of the third year, the City will be responsible for the cost of these new officers. While this is good news for Victoria, Council needs to remember that by accepting this grant we have actually pledged future new revenues toward this program. This grant will not impact the City‟s Fiscal Year 2012 Budget."

  • Just for the record, I will vote for TM Oconnor for Sheriff. He is a good man, he just needs to be polite and thank his givers.

  • Funny how the grant is from OBAMA's program for helping the under-unemployed VETS.
Funny how he, nor his admin or party are even mentioned in this right wing publication.
O'Connor and the Commissioners need to publicly thank OBAMA for providing these grants.
Oops, forgot, they don't publicly thank him for their FARM SUBSIDIES, AIRPORT GRANTS or ANY OTHER program that they take taxes from. They only criticize him for his spending...............any hypocrisy here?

  • The "grant" calls for the hiring of military veterans? Suppose that's because the department needs people who can drive the armored car and all the camo trucks the Sheriff keeps acquiring.
