Pro-Con introduction: Is fixed-income housing fair practice?

The Housing Authority of Victoria helps struggling families afford the basic necessities of shelter working with vouchers to help them pay rent and through housing set aside for them subsidized by tax credits.

But, housing in Victoria should reflect the rise of jobs and the strong economy that is drawing more of the working class to Victoria, said Realtor Marco Porras. As residents get back on their feet, the amount of fixed income housing needed should be re-evaluated as well.

"We need a fair balance in town between fixed income housing and the need for it," Porras said. "For the working class moving into Victoria, we need enough rental housing to accommodate them."

Most agree more housing is needed in Victoria, but the discussion continues on how to strike the balance between government-subsidized and market-based housing.
