Troopers find $134,800 cash during traffic stop

A man and  woman were arrested after suspected drug money was found by troopers in their vehicle during a traffic stop Saturday.

A man and a woman were arrested after troopers found $134,800 hidden throughout their car during a traffic stop on Saturday.

A Department of Public Safety trooper stopped a Nissan Sentra on suspicion of a traffic violation on U.S. Highway 59 between Edna and the Lavaca River in Jackson County about 2:26 p.m. Saturday, said DPS spokesman Trooper Gerald Bryant.

The trooper received permission from the driver to search the Sentra and found 14 bundles containing $134,800 in cash hidden in several locations in the vehicle, Bryant said.

Samuel E. Rodriguez, 40, of Tamaulipas, Mexico, and Lidia Maldonado-Guerrero 45, of McAllen, were arrested and charged with felony money laundering.

They are being held at the Jackson County Jail.
