In a week when scores were high, competition is at its best with two men matching high series scores and a lady breaking the 700 mark.

David Matthews and Steve Zeplin tied for the weekly high series with a great 739 total, and Denise Gabrysch outdistanced the women with her big series.

Matthews made a run at a perfecto in the middle game of Friday Mixed competition, when he started with 10 strikes before an eight-pin count stopped his bid for a 300 game. He finished with a 288 game and, combined with games of 216 and 235, totaled 739 for the night.

Zeplin ambushed the pins during Red River League competition to post games of 235, 237, and 267 for his big 739 set.

Gabrysch was competing in Sundowners League action when she also almost achieved a perfect game. After starting league play with games of 206 and 213, she was in a zone to string 10 strikes in a row before a nine-pin count stopped her string.

Her big game of 289 helped produce an excellent 708 series, which was one of her career best.

Dandy Richards was also in the mix for the high series with an outstanding 269 high game producing a 738 total. He also rolled a 704 set during a league makeup session in the same day.

Also breaking the 700 mark were Larry Miulec 277-732, Todd Pfuhl 257-724 and Brian Hyden 268-704.

Other scores of note for the men were Jerry Cano (278-697), Kim Blake (258-692), Steve Dickinson (249-687/663), Eddie Stevens Sr. (252-685), Scott Snow (677/259), Glenn Pitts (673), David Matthews (255-671), Larry Boyd (670), Mike Stacy (667), Randy Vivero (663), Mark Svatek (663), T.J. Mooney (662), Justin Tweedle (659), Ben Mooney (257-658), Bruce Luerssen (658), Mike Thomas (276-650), Ron Gabrysch (267), Michael Rodriguez (257), Sterling Kocian (256), Woody Lorance (256) and Kevin Mobley (253).

Rebekah Martinez was stringing strikes also when she rolled a 252 game to help towards a very nice 618 set.

Lynda Mikulec also broke the 600 mark with a 231 game, helping towards a 613 series.

Lori Heil with 231-598 and Jessica Thomas with 230-591 also bowled well.

Vera Cruz Restaurant Bowlers of the Week are Denise Gabrysch (789, Sundowners) and Dandy Richards (753, Sugar & Spice).

Kudos to senior bowler Eddie Stevens Sr. for his big 685 series and to Arnold (Buzz) Buzzell. Buzz is 79 years young and bowls in three leagues. He has been helping his team be competitive in the Red River League.
