IF YOU GO:
WHEN: 7:30 p.m. Friday WHERE: Our Saviour's Lutheran Church, 4102 N. Ben Jordan, Victoria COST: $5 TO PURCHASE TICKETS: Tickets may be purchased at the Our Saviour's Lutheran Church office, from any chorus member or at the door.
The Victoria College Choir will join the Victoria Civic Chorus and the accompanying Chamber Orchestra on Friday evening at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church.
This concert will feature work from "Requiem" by Karl Jenkins. Marylynn Fletcher will conduct the 50-voice choir and orchestra.
Requiems are traditionally solemn compositions dedicated to the souls of the dead. The Welsh musician, Jenkins, composed five introspective Japanese haiku poems between the traditional Latin texts of the Requiem mass.
"Jenkins takes an untraditional approach to his requiem," said Fletcher in a news release.
OC Garza, who volunteers with the choir, said the contemporary composer Jenkins strikes a great balance.
"It's a great mix of traditional themes with diverse, eclectic movements," he said.
Flautist Martha Fabrique, of San Antonio, will be a featured soloist who will give a short demonstration of the shakuhachi flute.
Fabrique is a world-recognized performer and scholar of the Japanese flute. She gave performances and lectures at the World Shakuhachi Festival in 2008 in Sydney, Australia.
Organizers said there is an increased interest in the blended concert style in Victoria.
"It's going to be a fabulous concert," said Garza.
