The 14th annual Healthy Aging Conference is the only regional conference devoted exclusively to education and health screening for senior adults and caregivers. The conference is co-hosted by Citizens Medical Center, the Golden Crescent Area Agency on Aging and Texas AgriLife Extension.

The event features nine educational sessions and a large health fair. The conference will be from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Thursday, May 17, at the Victoria Community Center. The cost is $2 at the door and includes a light breakfast, healthy box lunch, free health screening tests and door prizes.

"The Conference gets bigger and bigger each year. Our goal is to promote healthy lifestyles. Our senior adults really look forward to their special day," said Erika Bochat, Victoria County Extension Agent for Family and Consumer Sciences. "We have several new topics and guest speakers this year, including presentations on cardiovascular health, fall prevention, cataracts, asthma, communicating with healthcare professionals, container gardening, diabetes, Medicare fraud and scam prevention, and safe use of dietary supplements."

The health fair will also have a variety of information on health and wellness and other resources for caregivers. Screenings will also be available, including blood pressure checks, cholesterol, blood sugar, bone density and pneumonia vaccinations, which is new this year.

"Add food and door prizes, and it is truly a worthwhile event," Bochat said.

Advance registration is encouraged to assure enough meals are ordered but walk-ins are welcome. Register by calling the Victoria County Extension office at 361-575-4581. Limited free transportation is available for persons age 60 and over, so call the Area Agency on Aging at 361-578-1587, Ext. 223.
