Dr. Marshall Bishop, of Shiner, will have a book signing for his novel "The Coach Who Didn't Want to Win" from 1 to 5 p.m. on Saturday at Hastings.

In the fictional account, Bishop writes about two high school football players struggling under an authoritarian head coach who, for some reason, doesn't seem to want to win, according to the author's news release.

During a game, the two secretly switch jerseys with each other to play the positions they really want. When one scores a touchdown, a crisis of identity ensues that embroils their small Texas town in controversy.

"The book has a sports setting, but it's also about life in small-town Texas and how it revolves around Friday night football," Bishop said. "Football is in the plot line, but there are also spiritual themes throughout the story."

In this setting, Bishop explores and brings to life themes of unearned credit, unattained potential and atonement, according to the news release.

Bishop has been a practicing physician and a team doctor for the high school football team in Shiner for 11 years

"I enjoy being a doctor, but writing allows an outlet for the creative aspects of my mind," Bishop said in the news release.

"I wrote this book because I felt this was a story I had to tell. The characters are someone who I really enjoyed discovering and the context allowed me to investigate the nuances of some of my beliefs. I think the outcome is something that both young and old may enjoy."
