The Victoria school board could name a new principal at Patti Welder Middle School during its regular meeting Thursday night.
Carlos Garza resigned as principal in December. Mitchell Guidance Center's principal Trey Edwards has served as Patti Welder's interim principal.
The board could name the new hire after a closed session, during which they will also sort through about 50 superintendent applications to select candidates to interview. The candidates are expected to be interviewed next week.
"We have a bigger pool than we did six years ago, and a very strong pool," said Board President Tami Keeling. "I'm very pleased with what I know of the pool."
Texas law only calls for school boards to release the names of superintendent finalists, but most districts opt to only name one finalist, the district's attorney Clay Cain, said at a recent meeting. The law, intended to protect superintendents' current positions, allows for the rest of the process to be private.
The district sought public comment about the superintendent vacancy earlier this year.
Citing health concerns, VISD Superintendent Bob Moore said he would not seek an extension on his contract this year.
