Panthers sign tight end Finley
Joe Jon Finley has put his coaching career on hold.
The 6-foot-6, 251-pound tight end has signed a free agent contract with the Carolina Panthers.
Finley, the son of former Memorial and Victoria East head football coach Mickey Finley, was working as part of the support staff at the University of Oklahoma.
He was scheduled to become a graduate assistant coach at his alma mater in the fall.
Finley caught 62 passes for 775 yards and 10 touchdowns for the Sooners and was an honorable mention All-Big 12 selection his junior and senior years.
Finley spent the 2005 and 2006 seasons on the practice squad of the San Francisco 49ers, and the 2010 season on the practice squad of the Detroit Lions.
Finley was on the Lions' active roster for two weeks last season before being waived.
Finley signed with the Panthers after they waived tight end Tarren Lloyd.
