Mike & SWWW,
I am a believer because I have seen the result of wearing or not wearing a seat belt. The people whose live you effect from family and loved ones to the folks that try to put the "free spirit" back together will also have to live with the freedom of choice to protest big government.
If you don't practice safety belt use you will be a monument to Darwin in a box.

I agree but those who oppose the seat belt law are usually against most laws...We call. them-libertarians....I think lawmakers (human beings) know that we need a penalty component because people will not comply on their own because "the evil government can't tell me what to do.".....It's same for the FDA,EPA,or the IRS.IMO...Every now and then law enforcement needs to concentrate on seat belts, drunk driving and license checks to audit the system.....Remember the auto companies went kicking and screening when Congress initially wanted them to install the belts because it would cut into their profits.
Perhaps the libertarians can sign a waiver for EMS ,surgeons, and hospitals for unnecessary costs if they would have just buckled up...It's not hard nor is it too big of a price to pay for living in a civilized society.
I don't know for a fact but I think a good day for law enforcement would be 100% compliance than having to notify the next of kin or write out a ticket for not wearing a seat belt.

Vet...Your post is exactly right with no sarcasm. I NEVER back out of the driveway without my seatbelt on, but I wear it becuse they work not because of the law. In 1967, a seatbelt saved my worthless ol' life. I believe in'em and don't understand why anybody wouldn't wear one. I don't believe, however, that the government has any business telling its citizens that they must wear the things or face a fine. Fine? Oh, yeah, that's the revenue enhancement program the government has, isn't it? Please don't try to convince me that the government cares a whit about the safety of the citizens. it is all about the government controling what the citizens do and how they do it. If you don't toe the government line, they will get into your pocketbook.

You have the right to crush your chest into the steering wheel. The right ot be thrown out of your car and crushed when it rolls over you. You have the right do die protesting a seatbelt that could save your life. Really?

I don't think anyone has to worry, they are on their cell phones too much to notice things like that. Now screaming 70 down Main street, that's a different story.
