Cuero's Reed Schiffbauer tags a Boerne runner out between first and second base. Cuero pitcher Logan Goebel backs off the pitchers mound with a runner at first and third, then in a run down. Cuero got the runner on first but not before the runner at third scored.

CIBOLO - Cuero coach Scott Holder was disappointed with his team's lack of execution, but unhappier with its body language.

"We didn't execute two bunts that cost us two runs and it would have given us a 3-1 lead early in the game and a lot more confidence," he said. "I thought it was a good ballgame for four innings even though we didn't execute those two plays. I thought later on we lost our cool, lost our heads a little bit and lost our composure. We just didn't look good. We felt sorry for ourselves one or two innings and gave them some runs."

Boerne made the No. 9 Gobblers pay, claiming a 6-1 win in Game 1 of the best-of-three Class 3A regional quarterfinal series on Friday night at Cibolo Steele field.

Cuero (20-8-3) will attempt to rebound in Game 2 on Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Steele field. If Game 3 is necessary, it will follow Game 2.

Cuero had five hits, including two by Jordan Boothe, but struck out 10 times against Boerne starter Dalton D'Spain.

The Gobblers had base runners in five of the seven innings, but scored only in the third when Dustin Ohrt stole home on a delayed double steal.

"I put them in tough situations," Holder said. "We had them bunting with two strikes three times and usually we get those down."

The Greyhounds (19-6-2) scored their first three runs against Cuero starter Austin Johnson with two outs.

Boerne's third run scored on a delayed double-steal attempt in the fourth inning. The umpires originally ruled the run did not count, but changed the call and charged Cuero with obstructing the runner trying to get back to first base.

The Greyhounds broke the game open with three runs in the sixth inning when they had three hits, including two doubles, and took advantage of two Cuero errors.

"They got one run in and we kind of tensed up," Boothe said. "We started trying to throw harder on the mound and not really having your mind in the game, but worrying about what could happen and not really focusing on what should be done."

The Gobblers fouled off three third-strike bunt attempts and went 0 for 5 with runners in scoring position.

"I've got to remember that I've got some very young guys out there," Holder said. "Sometimes we're going to make those mistakes. We've just got to get better. These situations are good for those kids because they're so young, but they know we've got to be better than that."

Cuero was in the same situation in last week's area series against Salado and came back to win twice on Saturday.

"We cannot worry about what happened today," Boothe said. "We just need to let it go and come back with enthusiasm and fight and do what we did last week."
