Calhoun residents will choose how they're alerted

Soon, Calhoun County residents will be able to choose whether to be alerted by a ring of a phone call, text message or by email as a hurricane roars across land.
Ladonna Thigpen, the emergency management coordinator for Calhoun County, said the Delt Alert, a new emergency alert system, is tentatively slated to be up and running in June, just as hurricane system swings into gear.
Residents will be able to register online and choose how they want to receive emergency notifications in the event of a hurricane or any other disaster.
Otherwise, there won't be any other changes to how emergencies are handled in Calhoun County, Thigpen said. Emergency coordinators will carefully monitor the situation if there is a major storm or chemical spill, encouraging residents to heed the warning and prepare in advance if a hurricane does sweep through the county.
"We're a small office, so we only open the Emergency Operations Center when there's something major," she said.
